One Room Challenge – Week 4 Update
How is the time flying by so fast? We are halfway through the challenge and I’ve been working mostly on one thing, the cubby transformation. I am very excited with how it is coming along. As I am working on it, I have also been prepping the walls for painting. I am hoping to have both completed before the end of week five.
This is a typical cubby storage unit that you can buy at any Target or Walmart. I feel like it is a useful piece. It’s just not very pretty. I’ve seen so many other DIYers transform all types of IKEA furniture into beautiful pieces. It sparked my imagination to do something similar with this unit. In my mind, I see a creamy white with doors and and short, modern legs
Behr Paints Powdered Snow is a creamy white that is a soft color, and goes really well with the Minwax Special Walnut stain. For the panels, I looked at buying oak planks (which were too expensive), bead board panels, and shiplap (not the style I wanted). As I looked around our garage that stores remnants of all our projects, I spied some wood underlayment that we used when we installed our luxury vinyl plank floors. The grain was pretty, and it was the perfect 1/4″ thickness., and the price was right at $0!
Overall it took one coat of Kilz brand primer and two coats of Powdered snow. I also put two coats of stain on the panels. Once the panels were dry, I glued them to the outer sides and top of the unit. The idea in my mind is coming to reality.
So what is next for this cubby unit turning storage console? The next step is creating two doors with decorative inserts and attaching the legs/feet. The doors have been started and are made from more materials found in the garage (thank goodness Scott keep all the extra pieces of wood from our projects!).
During the next week, multiple projects will be going on at once. The plan is for the walls and wood trim to be painted while working on the console doors. Check back in next week to see how much further the room will have come along and you can always get all kinds of inspiration if you go to http://www.oneroomchallenge.com!
